و در نقطه ی صفری دولت کالیفرنیا و نوادا قرار گرفته و مجهولترین شوخی طبیعت را به مردم نمایش می دهد!

در خشکی اسرارآمیز پرتگاه مرگ کالیفرنیا، سنگ ها حرکت می کنند! سنگ ها، حتی اگر به جرم

یک آدم هم باشند، بدون هیچ انرژی محرکی شروع به حرکت می کنند و جایپایی از خود به جا می گذارند که شاید تا چند روز ماندگار باشد.

حدود هزار سال قبل بود که بومیان منطقه دره مرگ را کشف کردند و درست از همان زمان افسانه جن و پری درباره این دره سر زبان ها افتاد. در تمام این افسانه ها، ردپای موجودات نامرئی و شروری به چشم می خورد که با تردد خود و حرکت دادن سنگ ها رعب و وحشت را به دل بومیان منطقه می انداختند.

زمین شناسان برای درک اسرار این دره، تقریبا تمام قسمت های آن را مطالعه کرده اند. اولین فرضیه آن بود که این سنگ ها وقتی حرکت می کنند که سطح خارجی شان با قطرات

بسیار ریز یخ پوشیده شده و به دلیل رطوبت و صافی بی اندازه زمین، با کمک کوچکترین نسیم کویری به حرکت در می آیند. اما این نظریه خیلی زود رد شد چرا که سنگ ها در تابستان های داغ هم به حرکتشان ادامه می دادند. آنها حتی روی زمین ناهموار هم حرکت می کردند و از خود ردپا به جا می گذاشتند.

بنابراین پژوهشگران به این نتیجه رسیدند که حرکت سنگ های دره مرگ پدیده ای متشکل از چند عامل ناشناخته است که هر کدام از این عوامل می توانند روی هم اثر بگذارند و نتیجه ای شبیه این خلق کنند.

اما آنچه حرکت این سنگ ها را شگفت انگیزتر می کند، آن است که آنها به صورت موازی با هم حرکت می کنند. به این ترتیب هر سنگی در طول سالیان دراز یک راه دارد و همان را ادامه می دهد. هیچ کس تا به حال حرکت این سنگ ها را به چشم ندیده و حتی نمی داند این سنگ ها با چه سرعتی حرکت می کنند.

آنها گاهی در طول حرکتشان بر زمین مسطح دره، چرخی می خورند و روی وجه دیگرشان می لغزند. بنابراین در مسیر اختصاصی یک سنگ ممکن است چند ردپای گوناگون به چشم بخورد. این سنگ ها اگر بر حسب اتفاق به ردپای سنگ دیگری برسند، به شکل عجیبی تغییر مسیر می دهند و یک جهت دیگر را در پیش می گیرند!
